Jan Pieter Hartzema came to Utrecht at the age of sixteen to study at the School for Graphic Arts. After this, Hartzema also graduated from the University of the Arts in Utrecht. Hartzema rarely exhibited his work, because he did not paint to sell, but he painted to paint: with integrity and without concessions.
